The entire IMSA community, including students, faculty, and staff, were welcome to the event.<\/p>\n<p>The assembly began at 8:30 AM with an introduction from <strong>Adrienne Coleman<\/strong>, the event&#8217;s organizer. Following the introduction, the <strong>IMSA Choir<\/strong> sang \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing\u201d \u2013 also referred to as \u201cThe Negro National Hymn\u201d or \u201cThe Black National Anthem\u201d. Written in 1900, the song was first performed as a poem during Lincoln\u2019s birthday celebrations. Recently, many schools began adopting the song to celebrate MLK Day.<\/p>\n<p>IMSA students presented a reciting of Dr. King\u2019s \u201c<i>I Have a Dream<\/i> <i>Speech\u201d<\/i>. The speech was declaimed by the following students: <strong>Kevin Li, Vinesh Kannan, Andrew Adams, Yvette Ramirez, Ram Patel, Charmaine Ong, Allie Johnson, Atene Poskute, Julian, Pacheco, Kenneth Yun, Nick Damman, Sai Talluru, Cathy Chen, Raj Gurtatta, Guna Yerrabolu, Michael Adams, Lohitha Guntupalli, Taylor Herr<\/strong>, and<strong> Daniel Sohn<\/strong>. The audience was amazed to see the speech presented in a unique and diverse manner.<\/p>\n<p>The recitation of the speech laid out a platform for <strong>Branson Lawrence<\/strong>, IMSA&#8217;s principal, to introduce guest speaker and IMSA alum, <strong>Dwan Prude<\/strong>. Prude discussed Dr. King&#8217;s achievements.<\/p>\n<p>Following was a Freedom Riders skit performed by IMSA students. The performance commemorated the accomplishments of many famous freedom fighters during the African-American Civil Rights Movement.<\/p>\n<p>Then, IMSA President,<strong> Cathy Veal<\/strong> introduced Key Note Speaker, <strong>Dr. Julian Bond<\/strong>. Dr. Bond is a civil rights, economic justice, and peace movement activist who worked very closely with Dr. King. He is a\u00a0renowned American icon\u00a0\u00a0who currently holds 25 honorary degrees. \u201cIt was an honor to meet him and I feel very lucky to have shaken his hand\u201d says a senior. \u201cI could feel the history and experience that he had over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Dr. Julian Bond\u2019s speech on the Civil Rights Movement, IMSA students, <strong>Yasmine Gordon<\/strong> and <strong>Zion Harmon<\/strong> sang \u201cHis Eyes Are on the Sparrow\u201d. With amazing vocals that rang through the main gymnasium, they wowed the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, Adrienne Coleman concluded the celebration with \u201c<i>I Have a Dream, Part 2<\/i>\u201d. Ms. Coleman reiterated that while times have changed and many aspects of Dr. King\u2019s \u201c<i>I Have a Dream\u201d speech <\/i>have become a reality, there are still many changes that can be made to improve multicultural relationships in America.<\/p>\n<p>After the celebration were three afternoon activities: Freedom Riders sponsored by AASA, &#8220;Eyes on the Prize,&#8221; sponsored by LEAD and showing of &#8220;Les Phys,&#8221;\u00a0a full-length musical\u00a0written, directed and performed\u00a0by Dr. Dong.<\/p>\n<p>The program was co-sponsored by Chase Bank.
