{"id":14038,"date":"2015-02-16T14:50:57","date_gmt":"2015-02-16T20:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=14038"},"modified":"2015-03-09T00:34:08","modified_gmt":"2015-03-09T05:34:08","slug":"two-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2015\/02\/16\/two-words\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Words"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the many life lessons that my mother tried to instill in me is that it\u2019s never too late to say three things: \u201cthank you,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d and \u201cI love you.\u201d\u00a0 While I have my reservations about the latter two, my belief in the first has only strengthened with time.\u00a0 \u201cThank you\u201d is an essential phrase in our day-to-day lives.\u00a0 We mutter it at people when they hold the door open for us, when they compliment our new haircut, when they write letters of recommendation for us at the absolute last minute.\u00a0 And that\u2019s just it; we mutter it.\u00a0 \u201cThank you\u201d being one of my favorite phrases in the English language, I think we should shout it, or at least say it with our head held high.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you\u201d is about acknowledging the people who have made our lives better and letting them know that we appreciate it.\u00a0 As a declaration, then, shouldn\u2019t it be loud?\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t we be proud to say thank you?\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m obviously not going to advocate shouting every time someone holds a door an extra three seconds for you, but I do think that we as a school could afford to slow down and show our gratitude a little more often.\u00a0 We all depend on each other here, so when somebody helps somebody else out, it\u2019s practically expected.\u00a0 Helping each other is the norm at IMSA, and that\u2019s awesome, but it\u2019s also good to take a moment to appreciate that.\u00a0 When we acknowledge what a person has done for us, we are not only expressing our gratitude but also encouraging general nice-ness in the world.\u00a0 This sounds so na\u00efve, I know, but when we say thank you to one person, we\u2019re telling them that they did something good, and this makes it ever-so-slightly more likely that they\u2019ll do something like it again.\u00a0 So really, by thanking others we\u2019re helping ourselves too.<\/p>\n<p>We are high school students attending a state-funded boarding school dedicated to challenging us and furthering our education in what is (purportedly) our passion.\u00a0 I know that most of us are grateful for this, but it\u2019s not something I hear about a lot.\u00a0 We are surrounded not only by our hyper-intelligent peers and friends but also by incredibly supportive adults who work to help make our dreams a reality.\u00a0 Yes, they\u2019re getting paid (not enough), but that still isn\u2019t easy.\u00a0 So yes, be grateful for IMSA and the people who help make it our daily reality.\u00a0 In fact, do more than just <em>be<\/em> grateful: show your gratitude and say thank you.\u00a0 Say it to the Sodexo workers, to the teachers, to the peer tutor who stays up late to help you with your problem set.\u00a0 Say it loud and proud because, like always, you really mean it.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for reading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the many life lessons that my mother tried to instill in me is that it\u2019s never too late to say three things: \u201cthank&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":162,"featured_media":14227,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[],"coauthors":[2340],"class_list":["post-14038","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-opinions"],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14038","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/162"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=14038"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14038\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":14235,"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14038\/revisions\/14235"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/14227"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=14038"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=14038"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=14038"},{"taxonomy":"author","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/coauthors?post=14038"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
