{"id":17289,"date":"2017-01-31T11:12:05","date_gmt":"2017-01-31T17:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=17289"},"modified":"2017-01-31T11:12:05","modified_gmt":"2017-01-31T17:12:05","slug":"cuban-migrants-stopped-at-border","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2017\/01\/31\/cuban-migrants-stopped-at-border\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuban Migrants Stopped at Border"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico \u2013 On January 12<sup>th<\/sup>, now former President Barack Obama ended the \u201cWet foot, dry foot\u201d policy that had allowed special immigration for Cubans without visas into the United States. As a result,&nbsp;more than 1000 Cubans who had left Cuba before the change in policy are now stuck along the Mexico \u2013 United States&nbsp;border, hoping that they will be allowed to enter the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cWet foot, dry foot\u201d law permitted Cuban migrants who reached the United States by land to stay in the country, while those caught at sea must return. However, the policy was ended abruptly without much forewarning, and many Cuban migrants who had already left their country and were on their way to the United States are now stuck in a state of limbo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody was racing to get here before the inauguration on the 20<sup>th<\/sup>,\u201d said Yamila Gonzalez Cabeza, a teacher from Cuba now stranded in Nuevo Laredo. She and many others thought that the Trump administration would close off the borders. \u201cThe reverse was true. We did not expect this surprise on the 12<sup>th<\/sup>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marleni Barbier remains optimistic. A former dental assistant, she sold everything she owned and fled to Cuba, arriving to the Mexico-U.S. border after a six-month long journey, only to find out that the law had changed a few hours before. &#8220;I have faith that Trump will change it,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>But as of now, there is no indication yet from the Trump administration of any action on this situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly have sympathy for them,&#8221; said Henry Cellar, a Democratic Representative from Texas, &#8220;But the policy has been changed, and the moment they changed it, the policy was eliminated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For most, returning to Cuba is simply just not an option.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, if I\u2019m deported I will probably have to serve two months in jail,&#8221; said Yenier Echevarria Gonzalez, a former baker. &#8220;And I will never again have a job, a car or a house \u2013 ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He is among the many migrants who might might face political problems and persecution if they return to their country.
