In a Monday meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for world leaders to follow the United States in imposing new economic sanctions against Iran.<\/p>\n
U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s Treasury Department\u2019s announcement of sanctions against 25 Iranian individuals and companies to terrorists and Iran\u2019s ballistic missile program came on Friday. Recently, Tehran launched a ballistic missile test, drawing immediate criticism from the Trump administration, who cited this test as one of the reasons for the freshly imposed sanctions.<\/p>\n
Netanyahu voiced his support for Trump’s response.<\/p>\n
\u201cIran seeks to annihilate Israel,” said Netanyahu to May, during their meeting. “It says so openly. It seeks to conquer the Middle East, it threatens Europe, it threatens the West, it threatens the World. And it offers provocation after provocation. That\u2019s why I welcome President Trump\u2019s insistence of new sanctions against Iran. I think other nations should follow soon, certainly responsible nations.”<\/p>\n
Following an often unsympathetic relationship with former U.S. President Obama, President Trump\u2019s friendliness towards Israel and Israeli interests seems to have bolstered Netanyahu\u2019s rhetoric.<\/p>\n
After the meeting between May and Netanyahu, a spokeswoman for the U.K. Prime Minister stressed British commitment to the enforcement of the Iranian nuclear deal and added that the the U.K. acknowledges Iran\u2019s pattern of destabilizing activity in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
President Trump has long expressed his opposition to the nuclear deal, pledging to \u201cdismantle the deal\u201d and \u201cforce the Iranians back to the bargaining table to make a much better deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
