In a peer-reviewed memo released today, SIR assistant Dr. Roger Idaki announced the closure of IMSA\u2019s celebrated Student Inquiry and Research department.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were deep, insurmountable issues with the program\u2019s name,\u201d explained Dr. Idaki. \u201cFirstly, the \u2018Student\u2019 part of \u2018SIR\u2019 was a disaster. SIR isn\u2019t about the students\u2019 curiosities, dreams, or development of passions. It\u2019s not about students, period.”<\/p>\n
Furthermore, \u201cthe \u2018Inquiry\u2019 part also implied students would be thinking for themselves,” and that simply wasn’t true. As Idaki stated, “our high school students are not kids playing around; we treat them as adults who can robotically execute the ideas of their advisors, who in turn can be properly micromanaged by our department.”<\/p>\n
He also addressed an unknown student to further his line of reasoning. \u201cYou say you want to be a particle physicist,\u201d Idaki declared. \u201cBut you don\u2019t know for sure<\/em>. Which is why you should be studying trees, not exploring what you might be interested in. Also, we\u2019re not here to turn you into a particle physicist.
