It is a time to celebrate friends, family, and give thanks for all the good things in life. However, seemingly more and more people each year are disregarding Thanksgiving altogether in favor of flashier, more exciting holidays. Now is the time for people to realize that this neglect of Thanksgiving cannot go on forever. We all need to give Thanksgiving a little more thanks in return.

With only three days until the day, you’d think that festivities would be at a maximum, yet everywhere you go, you almost exclusively hear holiday music and houses already decorated with festive lights. I mean, I enjoy good holiday music as much as the next person, but “Jingle Bells” this early in the season? Let’s just say it’s raising some eyebrows.

After bringing up this dilemma to a fellow IMSA senior, the response I got was, “That’s disgusting! If you’re playing holiday music this early, I will hunt you down.” These weren’t just ravings of one particularly mad individual. Katya Bezugla (‘18), also weighed in on the subject, yelling “No no no no no no no no… NO!” It’s safe to say this topic can really ruffle some people’ feathers.

Though these valiant defenders of Thanksgiving may have strong opinions, it seems they aren’t taking enough action to counteract society’s trend away from Thanksgiving. Plenty of people are still entranced by the mystical quality of the winter holidays and are blind to the time Thanksgiving gives us to show our appreciation for one another. One of these people, who wishes to remain anonymous, addressed listening to holiday music prior to Thanksgiving by exclaiming, “I’m so down. It hypes me up so much. I love holiday music. I was listening to it in August.” They then proceeded to sing various holiday songs for a good three minutes.

Clearly, this is a very contentious issue, with some people adamantly against the neglect of Thanksgiving, where others might not even remember the holiday exists. Given even the slightest intentions, Thanksgiving will reveal itself as a very wholesome holiday. There’s turkey, bread rolls, stuffing, pumpkin pie— basically just a lot of food, and who doesn’t love food? So, this Thanksgiving, at least make an attempt to give the holiday the love it deserves.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner!
