{"id":20901,"date":"2018-02-14T14:05:53","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T20:05:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=20901"},"modified":"2018-02-14T16:08:00","modified_gmt":"2018-02-14T22:08:00","slug":"diverse-women-in-stem-the-beginning-of-much-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2018\/02\/14\/diverse-women-in-stem-the-beginning-of-much-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Diverse Women in STEM: The Beginning of Much More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, February 13, five women of the IMSA community took part in a Diverse Women in STEM panel hosted by the IRC. IMSA assistant principal <strong>Diane Hinterlong<\/strong>, IN2 program manager <strong>Betty Hart<\/strong>, IMSA physics teacher <strong>Brooke Schmidt<\/strong>, and Benedictine University biology professor (and IMSA charter class member!) <strong>Cheryl Heinz<\/strong> answered questions, discussed personal experiences, and gave advice to about fifty audience members.<\/p>\n<p>Co-sponsored by BELLAS, Girls IN2 STEM, and PME, the event was meant to \u201cdiscuss the inquiries of women in STEM and how to create a climate of equality on IMSA campus.\u201d <strong>Dr. Adrienne Coleman<\/strong>, Director of Equity and Inclusion, gave opening remarks and noted that the panel was part of \u201cour diversity and inclusion plan,\u201d before handing it off to <strong>Dr. Kelly Page<\/strong>, IMSA\u2019s new research fellow, to moderate the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>The rarity of women in STEM was an underlying theme throughout panelist responses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s also a lot more proving to be done in many ways; just like any underrepresented population in a particular field, in a particular area, people make assumptions about how you got there,\u201d Hinterlong says. \u201cSo being an engineer, especially prior to coming here, people made assumptions like \u2018you got that job because you are a girl, and that\u2019s why they gave it to you, not because you are qualified to do that role.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hinterlong also recounted stories of being passed up for a Masters program despite having the same qualifications as her male peer (who ultimately got the job), and spoke about the time when she was told by her supervisor to pick a project she could handle; he thought she was wasting her time getting this engineering degree \u2013 wouldn\u2019t she be marrying and having children soon?<\/p>\n<p>When asked about being assertive, however, Hart pointed out that being loud might not be necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, culturally speaking, asserting yourself can be a challenge because depending on how you\u2019re raised, some of us are raised to be quiet,\u201d she said. \u201cBut being a mentor doesn\u2019t mean you have to be loud, being a mentor doesn\u2019t mean you have to be assertive; you have to have confidence, you have to have hope, and you have to have love in your heart to give up yourself, your gifts and talents, to other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heinz drew largely upon her experiences in the community at Benedictine, having taught there for almost fifteen years now and feeling assured in her role. \u201cI went to a place where I knew that I could be me,\u201d she said. \u201cThere were other women who were there before me who spoke out and still have respect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, she has still called out colleagues and filed Title IX complaints. \u201cWhen something happens, it\u2019s going to hurt, and this is where support networks help \u2013 you want to make sure you have people that stand up for you,\u201d said Heinz.<\/p>\n<p>Discussion also touched on supporting working mothers, as Schmidt talked about finding a supportive workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to change the culture of the workplaces,\u201d she said. \u201cYou might want to look into these fields carefully &#8211; how many hours a week are you expected to be there, what are the family leave policies\u2026like do you get paid leave? Working here at IMSA, I was fortunate when I started; when my older son was about 18 months old, I had my younger son, and I took maternity leave and was able to come back and just work part time for a year following that. Those flexible leave policies are really important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panelists agreed on the necessity of inspiring more young girls to get involved in STEM. Heinz noted that the coed IMSA summer camps were full within fifteen minutes of registration opening, while \u201cthe one that was only for girls was still open\u201d nine hours later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you know any eighth or ninth grade girls who\u2019d want to spend a week here in the summer, let them know,\u201d she said. \u201cFill it up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hart called on boys and men in the audience to \u201cfind out how you can be a <em>men<\/em>tor,\u201d as panelists discussed the support of men in their lives and the importance of appreciating differences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wrote an article on LinkedIn,\u201d Hart said. \u201cAnd I ended it this way: we are not competition.
