At times, that word already exists in one\u2019s vocabulary, and other times it\u2019s discovered through someone or something else. The amount of variety that exists in just one language is boundless. As language and culture are so closely intertwined, the range and attributes of each language are as unique as the culture from which they originate. Out of these differences emerge words that are difficult to accurately translate from one language to another. Such words have the capacity to express an experience, feeling, memory, and all things that may have once seemed indescribable. This has been my experience with speaking Korean and English with similar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;frequency throughout my life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following Korean words\/phrases are ones that I don&#8217;t dare attempt to translate in daily conversation because a sloppy English interpretation just does not stand up to the Korean expression.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In these examples, the direct translation was taken from google translate, and the meaning is my interpretation of the word\/phrase.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>1.\ud5d0 (Heol)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Direct translation: \u201cOMG\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What it means: Can\u2019t believe it, wow, that\u2019s crazy, that\u2019s unfair, that\u2019s absurd, no way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>2. \ub2f9\ud669\uc2a4\ub7fd\ub2e4 (Dahng-hwahng-seu-lop-dah)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Direct translation: \u201cAm embarrassed\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What it means: I am embarrassed\/panicked. That was unexpected\/surprising\/burdensome. I don\u2019t know what to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>3. \uc5b4\uc774\uc5c6\ub2e4 (Eo-ee-eob-dda)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Direct translation: \u201cNo way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What it means: [Something\/Someone is] ridiculous, rude, unbelievable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>4. \ub2f5\ub2f5\ud574 (Dahb-dahb-hae)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Direct translation: \u201cStuffy\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What it means: Agitating, suffocating, stuffy, frustrating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>5. \ub208\uce58 (Noonchi)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Direct translation: \u201cTact\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What it means: The quality of having or not having awareness of self and others.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>6. \ub208\uce58 \ube60\ub974\ub2e4 (Noonchi bbaluda)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Direct translation: \u201cNotice quickly\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What it means: Observant, having good sense, receptive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>7. \ub208\uce58 \uc5c6\ub2e4 (Noonchi obda)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Direct translation: \u201cWithout notice\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What it means: Ignorant, childish, immature, senseless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether someone speaks a native language at home or they&#8217;re currently learning one, they&#8217;re likely to come across distinctive words like the ones aforementioned.
