{"id":30711,"date":"2021-10-18T20:07:44","date_gmt":"2021-10-19T01:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=30711"},"modified":"2021-10-18T20:07:44","modified_gmt":"2021-10-19T01:07:44","slug":"imsas-national-hispanic-heritage-month-celebrations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2021\/10\/18\/imsas-national-hispanic-heritage-month-celebrations\/","title":{"rendered":"IMSA&#8217;s National Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 through October 15, featuring celebrations of the histories, contributions, and cultures of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central, and South America. But the heritage month itself has roots reaching back more than fifty years ago,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/proclamation-3869-national-hispanic-heritage-week-1968\">designated<\/a> the week including September 15 and 16 as National Hispanic Heritage Week. Then in 1988, President Ronald Reagan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/STATUTE-102\/pdf\/STATUTE-102-Pg1012.pdf\">expanded<\/a> this week to a 30-day celebration starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Then, September 16 is Mexico\u2019s Independence Day, and September 18 is Chile\u2019s Independence Day.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30715\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30715\" class=\"wp-image-30715 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/latinx_event2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/latinx_event2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/latinx_event2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/latinx_event2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/latinx_event2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/latinx_event2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Latinx Heritage Festival || ISP Student Productions<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, Alma Latina, a club dedicated to spreading Latinx culture throughout IMSA, participated in National Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting multiple events. For example, Alma Latina, alongside Peer Multicultural Educators (PME) and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, hosted a Latinx Heritage Festival on September 25th.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Lethzy Gutierrez \u201822, Alma Latina\u2019s Vice-President, details,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cThis event has never been done before this year. Alongside these activities, Michael Reyes, a spoken word artist, who tours internationally and facilitates educational performances and workshops, was performing.<\/p>\n<p>Also, there was a keynote speaker that talked about their life as a Hispanic\/Latinx person, their accomplishments, struggles, and how they continue to overcome them.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But the fun didn\u2019t end there, as the week of October 3rd was filled to the brim with exciting events. Lethzy Gutierrez continues that on October 4th, there was \u201c&#8230;a Kick-off GA to learn more about Alma Latina as well as about the events hosted throughout the week.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;On Tuesday, [Alma Latina collaborated] with Artifact, IMSA\u2019s cultural art club, to bring to the student body a Latinx Art GA at IN2, where they [learned] about Latinx art and artists as well as [had] the possibility of winning a $15 Amazon gift card.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30717\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30717\" class=\"wp-image-30717 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/artifact_nhhm2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/artifact_nhhm2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/artifact_nhhm2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/artifact_nhhm2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/10\/artifact_nhhm2.jpg 1242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Latinx Art GA || IMSA Student Productions<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;On Wednesday, [Alma Latina collaborated] with BSU (Black Student Union) to reflect on Casa De Harambee at the TV pit, as well as talk about how you can get involved in [Casa De Harambee] this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then, to finish off the National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, on Thursday, October 14, Alma Latina will be giving out free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mexicoinmykitchen.com\/aguas-frescas\/\">Aguas Frescas<\/a>, a popular Mexican drink prepared with a mix of water, fruits, sugar, and ice cubes, at Lexington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After all these celebrations, the appreciation for Hispanic Heritage doesn\u2019t end. Two of my favorites include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/IREKANI\">IREKANI<\/a>, an earring shop, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/Jessartlet\">Jessartlet<\/a>, which sells prints and stickers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some other ways to keep on supporting the Hispanic and Latinx community would be by buying and reading some of the books written by those who identify as Hispanic as well as listening to podcasts created by Hispanics and Latinx people!\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Hispanic Heritage Month is coming close to an end, but understanding and appreciating Hispanic culture does not necessarily mean it is limited to only 30 days a year.
