{"id":31577,"date":"2021-12-16T23:03:12","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T05:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=31577"},"modified":"2021-12-16T23:03:12","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T05:03:12","slug":"oxford-high-school-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2021\/12\/16\/oxford-high-school-shooting\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford High School Shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 15-year-old sophomore Ethan Crumbley came out of a bathroom in Oxford High School with a handgun and started firing, promptly killing four students.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A few days after the shooting, the district\u2019s superintendent requested an independent investigation into the incident.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tim Throne, the head of the Oxford Community Schools district, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/p8cdn4static.sharpschool.com\/UserFiles\/Servers\/Server_733753\/File\/Message%20from%20Supt.%20Throne%20-%20Dec.%204,%202021.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">detailed in a letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Dec. 4 the school\u2019s account of several key events leading up to the shooting.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Day Before the Shooting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Nov. 29, the Monday before the shooting, a teacher saw the shooter looking at photos of ammunition on his cell phone in class and called for a meeting with a counselor and one other staff member.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this meeting, Crumbley explained to the staff members that he and his mother had recently gone to a shooting range and that \u201cshooting sports are a family hobby,\u201d Throne wrote in the letter.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the letter, the school tried to contact the shooter\u2019s mother, but she never responded. She did, however, text her son saying, \u201cLOL I\u2019m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught,\u201d prosecutors revealed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Morning of the Shooting<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Nov. 30, the day of the shooting, a teacher alerted school counselors and the dean of students about \u201cconcerning drawings and written statements\u201d that Crumbley had created, according to Throne\u2019s letter.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was \u201cimmediately removed from the classroom\u201d and sent to a guidance counselor\u2019s office, where he told a school counselor that \u201cthe drawing was a part of a video game he was designing.\u201d He went on to inform counselors that he \u201cplanned to pursue video game design as a career,\u201d Throne wrote in his letter.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the conversation about his drawings and statements, Crumbley stayed in the office for over an hour as staff called his parents and waited for them to arrive at the school. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While they were waiting, the shooter said he was concerned about missing homework assignments and \u201crequested his science homework, which he then worked on while in the office,\u201d the letter noted. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAt no time did the counselors believe the student might harm others based on his behaviors, responses and demeanor, which appeared calm,\u201d Throne said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once the parents arrived at the school, the school counselors asked the shooter more questions, which \u201cled counselors to again conclude he did intend on committing either self-harm or harm to others,\u201d according to the letter.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The counselors urged Crumbley&#8217;s parents to seek counseling for their son within the next 48 hours, otherwise, the school would contact Child Protective Services, Throne wrote. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The parents refused to take the shooter back home and instead returned to work.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because he had no previous disciplinary issues, the counselors allowed him to return to class. They did not inform the principal or assistant principal of this decision, according to Throne.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhile we understand this decision has caused anger, confusion and prompted understandable questioning, the counselors made a judgment based on their professional training and clinical experience and did not have all the facts we now know,\u201d Throne explained.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Shooting<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Karen McDonald, the Oakland County prosecutor who is leading the case, said Crumbley allegedly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/05\/us\/michigan-oxford-high-school-shooting-sunday\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">had the gun in his backpack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> during the meeting with the school officials and his parents.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The shooter started firing \u201cduring passing time between classes when hundreds of students were in the hallway transitioning from one classroom to the other,\u201d Throne detailed in the letter.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students and staff were fast to act though. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBefore the shooter was able to walk a short distance to enter the main hallway, students and staff had already entered classrooms, locked doors, erected makeshift barricades and locked down or fired according to their training,\u201d Throne wrote. \u201cThe suspect was not able to gain access to a single classroom.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just before 1 p.m., authorities received a 911 call about an active shooter at the school, according to the Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/multiple-people-injured-shooting-oxford-high-school-michigan-officials-rcna7128\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than a hundred 911 calls came in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to dispatch after that.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the news of an active shooter was made public, Jennifer Crumbley, the mother, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox2detroit.com\/news\/oxford-high-school-shooting-timeline-key-moments-in-the-case\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">texted her son<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: \u201cEthan don\u2019t do it.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fifteen minutes after Jennifer Crumbley texted the shooter, James Crumbley, the father and Jennifer Crumbley\u2019s husband, called 911 to report that a gun was missing from his house and that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox2detroit.com\/news\/oxford-high-school-shooting-timeline-key-moments-in-the-case\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he believes the shooter is his son<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The shooter fired at least a dozen shots before he was taken into custody.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When he was arrested, the Sheriff noted that the shooter had an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-michigan-4e1a14622ed8c5a6bcc7e8da88e3c33d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">additional 18 rounds of ammunition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on him.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students were evacuated and taken to a nearby store\u2019s parking lot to be reunited with their families.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31578\" style=\"width: 371px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Michigan. || Photo credit: Eric Seals<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><b>Deaths of Students<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hana St. Juliana, 14, Tate Myre, 16, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Justin Shilling, 17, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CW_hYDBlpFT\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all died in the shooting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hana St. Juliana, the youngest person killed, was a freshman. She played on the volleyball and basketball teams at the high school. At the Dec. 1 news conference, McDonald said the girl\u2019s parents wanted people to know that their daughter was \u201cone of the happiest and most joyful kids.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tate Myre was a linebacker and tight end on the school\u2019s football team. He had just recently earned an all-region award from the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association. He was described by his classmates as being incredibly well liked and funny, \u201ca sarcastic, joking person,\u201d and a very intelligent student. He died in a patrol car as deputies were taking him to the hospital.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Madisyn Baldwin was described by her grandmother as a \u201cbeautiful, smart, sweet loving girl.\u201d She was also a \u201ctalented artist and big sister,\u201d McDonald announced at the Dec. 1 news conference.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Justin Shilling was on the Oxford Wildcats boys\u2019 bowling team. He had scored a match victory in March, which helped lead the team to a 30-0 win.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many were in critical condition, as well.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A 15-year-old boy was shot in the head, and a 14-year-old girl was shot in the neck and chest and was put on a ventilator, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/multiple-people-injured-shooting-oxford-high-school-michigan-officials-rcna7128\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">according to Sheriff Michael Bouchard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Charges Against the Shooter<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The shooter was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-michigan-terrorism-7c0836469c98c31a854cd22a59f92cef\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">charged as an adult<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with two dozen crimes including first-degree murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, gun crimes, and terrorism causing death. His defense attorney Scott Kozak entered a plea of not guilty.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31579\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31579\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31579\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/12\/shooter-oxford-article-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/12\/shooter-oxford-article-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/12\/shooter-oxford-article-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2021\/12\/shooter-oxford-article.jpeg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ethan Crumbley, center, appears on a video arraignment at 52nd District Court in Rochester Hills, Michigan, Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021, eight days after opening fire at Oxford High School, killing four and wounding seven others. || Photo credit: Paul Sancya<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McDonald said the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-michigan-4e1a14622ed8c5a6bcc7e8da88e3c33d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shooting was premeditated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, based on a \u201cmountain of digital evidence\u201d against the shooter.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis was not just an impulsive act.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the shooting, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-michigan-4e1a14622ed8c5a6bcc7e8da88e3c33d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">two videos the shooter had made<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the night before were found on his cell phone. In these videos, he discusses shooting and killing students at the school. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Investigators also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-michigan-4e1a14622ed8c5a6bcc7e8da88e3c33d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">found a journal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in his backpack that detailed his \u201cdesire to shoot up the school to include murdering students.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Fox 2 Detroit, there was also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox2detroit.com\/news\/investigators-seize-guns-from-suspected-oxford-school-shooters-home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a shocking post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on the shooter\u2019s Instagram account that allegedly read, &#8220;&#8216;Now I become death, destroyer of worlds.&#8217; See you tomorrow Oxford.\u201d The post has since been deleted.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Four days before the shooting, the shooter\u2019s father <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/05\/us\/michigan-oxford-high-school-shooting-sunday\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">James Crumbley bought the gun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> used in the shooting. Shortly afterward, the shooter posted a picture on his Instagram of the gun with the caption, \u201cJust got my new beauty today. SIG SAUER 9mm\u201d with a heart-eyes emoji, McDonald said.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McDonald also explained that Jennifer Crumbley <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/05\/us\/michigan-oxford-high-school-shooting-sunday\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">posted a photo of the gun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on social media, calling it \u201c[Ethan&#8217;s] new Christmas present.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe deliberately brought the handgun that day with the intent to murder as many students as he could,\u201d assistant prosecutor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-michigan-4e1a14622ed8c5a6bcc7e8da88e3c33d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marc Keas said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> while arguing for no bail for the shooter and a transfer to jail from a juvenile facility. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere is nothing that he could have faced that would warrant senseless, absolutely brutal violence on other kids,\u201d the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-michigan-4e1a14622ed8c5a6bcc7e8da88e3c33d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sheriff said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in response to the shooting.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to terrorize a generation of these kids who were in the school.
