Here is a look at four of the most popular albums of the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SOUR <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by Olivia Rodrigo<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first release of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SOUR<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, \u201cdriver\u2019s license,\u201d quickly became a hit at the beginning of 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/15\/entertainment\/olivia-rodrigo-drivers-license-spotify-trnd\/index.html\">breaking Spotify\u2019s record<\/a> for most streams in a day for a non-holiday song within three days of its release. The heartbreak ballad is now Spotify\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seventeen.com\/celebrity\/a38415474\/olivia-rodrigo-drivers-license-spotify-wrapped-2021\/\">most popular song<\/a> of 2021, amassing 1.1 billion streams. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">High School Musical: The Musical: The Series<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> actress, Olivia Rodrigo, became a breakout star this year with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SOUR<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, performing hits from the album at the BRIT Awards, Saturday Night Live, and most recently, the American Music Awards. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SOUR<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was Spotify\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/music\/news\/olivia-rodrigo-bts-streaming-year-end-charts-1235142797\/?cx_testId=48&amp;cx_testVariant=cx_1&amp;cx_artPos=3#cxrecs_s\">top album of 2021<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a02. Red (Taylor\u2019s Version) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by Taylor Swift<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The second of Swift\u2019s re-recorded albums was released in November of 2021 and included not only <a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/1225504\/jessicasager\/taylor-swift-red-taylors-version\/\">updated recordings<\/a> of some of Swift\u2019s most iconic songs, such as \u201cI Knew You Were Trouble\u201d and \u201cWe Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,\u201d but bonus songs <a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/1225504\/jessicasager\/taylor-swift-red-taylors-version\/\">\u201cfrom the vault\u201d<\/a> that never made it on to the original album, such as the full, ten-minute version of \u201cAll Too Well.\u201d The re-recorded album had Swifties overjoyed to once again hear the nostalgic hits from nearly a decade ago and gave Swift a chance to <a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/1225504\/jessicasager\/taylor-swift-red-taylors-version\/\">take back an album<\/a> that was rightfully hers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a03. 30<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Adele<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">30<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Adele was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/adele-30-uk-biggest-album-2021-1235015279\/\">biggest selling album<\/a> of the year in the U.K. Globally, fans were pleasantly surprised to see Adele return to music with \u201cEasy on Me\u201d after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/15\/arts\/music\/playlist-adele-easy-on-me.html\">a six-year hiatus<\/a>. The hit was released in October and was inspired by the struggles the pop star experienced in her personal life through the past few years. Because of the success of \u201cEasy on Me\u201d and the second track of the album, \u201cOh My God,\u201d and as of January 5th, Adele had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/adele-tops-artist-100-chart-18th-week-hits-billboard-200-milestone-1235015648\/\">spent eighteen weeks<\/a> at No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart, making her the most popular artist in the U.S. at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 4. Montero <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by Lil Nas X<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lil Nas X went from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/the-transformation-of-lil-nas-x-montero\/\">having negative $5.62 dollars<\/a> in his bank account to being the number one artist in the world after the release of his massive hit, \u201cOld Town Road\u201d back in 2019. He later came out as gay and has since become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/the-transformation-of-lil-nas-x-montero\/\">strong voice for the LGBTQ+<\/a> community, advocating for gay artists to be able to express their sexuality through their music. His debut album released back in September, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/12\/28\/1068323960\/lil-nas-x-pop-revolutionary\">a variety of focuses<\/a>, including stories about people he has met in life, his mom and dad\u2019s parenting mistakes, and giving hope to his depressed teenage self before coming out.
