{"id":32386,"date":"2022-03-20T00:50:43","date_gmt":"2022-03-20T05:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=32386"},"modified":"2022-03-20T00:50:43","modified_gmt":"2022-03-20T05:50:43","slug":"red-cross-declares-first-ever-blood-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2022\/03\/20\/red-cross-declares-first-ever-blood-shortage\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Cross Declares First-Ever Blood Shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The American Red Cross says the nation is facing the worst blood shortage in over a decade.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In just the last year, the Red Cross\u2014which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/about-us\/news-and-events\/press-release\/2022\/blood-donors-needed-now-as-omicron-intensifies.html#:~:text=The%20American%20Red%20Cross%20is,until%20more%20products%20become%20available\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">supplies 40% of the nation with blood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whsv.com\/2022\/02\/06\/american-red-cross-is-still-experiencing-blood-shortage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">saw a 41% decrease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in first-time blood donors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The organization <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/local-homepage\/news\/article\/red-cross--national-blood-crisis-may-put-patients-at-risk.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said in early January<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that the \u201cnational blood crisis\u201d is threatening patient care and putting doctors in positions to choose which patients get blood transfusions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>What\u2019s Causing the Shortage<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Red Cross has seen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/about-us\/news-and-events\/press-release\/2022\/blood-donors-needed-now-as-omicron-intensifies.html#:~:text=The%20American%20Red%20Cross%20is,until%20more%20products%20become%20available\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a significant drop in donors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There have been ongoing blood drive cancellations, staffing limitations, and lower donor turnout ever since the Delta variant began spreading in August of 2021.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/01\/11\/1072154905\/red-cross-blood-crisis-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since March of 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, there has been a 10% overall blood donation decline and a 62% drop in college and high school blood drives.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAt a time when many businesses and organizations across the country are experiencing pandemic challenges, the Red Cross is no different. And while we are all learning how to live in this new environment\u2026 donating blood must continue to be part of it,\u201d Dr. Pampee Young, the chief medical officer of the Red Cross, said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This, however, is not the first shortage since the onset of the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to a blood shortage in April 2020, the federal government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2020\/04\/02\/826096978\/fda-loosens-restrictions-on-gay-blood-donors-amid-urgent-need-caused-by-coronavi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">loosened restrictions on blood donations from gay men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. (Critics argue that this ban is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/02\/11\/967079433\/despite-blood-supplies-critically-low-some-gay-men-still-cannot-donate-plasma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">based on stigma rather than science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, though.)&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The increasingly tough winter weather is also lowering blood donor turnouts, as well.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWinter weather across the country and the recent surge of COVID-19 cases are compounding the already-dire situation facing the blood supply,\u201d Dr. Baia Lasky, the medical director for the Red Cross, said in a statement on the Red Cross\u2019s behalf.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Personal Impacts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kristen Mill of Spring Grove, Illinois, has been suffering from ongoing health problems caused by a tick bite in 2009.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her body doesn\u2019t produce enough hemoglobin to carry oxygen through her blood. When her hemoglobin levels drop, these blood transfusions are needed for her to survive. She has needed weekly transfusions to help her condition for most of the summer and fall of 2021.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On a recent visit to the hospital, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/about-us\/news-and-events\/press-release\/2022\/blood-donors-needed-now-as-omicron-intensifies.html#:~:text=The%20American%20Red%20Cross%20is,until%20more%20products%20become%20available\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">she was told there was no blood that matched her blood type<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and that she would have to wait until some were made available.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe hospital came to me and they apologized, and they said, \u2018We\u2019re so sorry. Our blood bank is depleted to the point where we don\u2019t have anyone that matches with you,\u2019\u201d Mill explained. \u201cIt\u2019s very scary, especially if you don\u2019t know if the blood is coming because this is something that you need to live.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She has had to wait for blood on multiple different occasions in the past few weeks.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt has become quite common that I would have to wait two or three days for blood. Then my condition would get worse, and I\u2019d need to be hospitalized while waiting for blood. It usually took two days, sometimes three days, which is a long time when you are waiting for something that could save your life.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She explained that she worries that she might go in for a transfusion one day and the blood won\u2019t make it to the hospital in time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because of her personal experience with the blood shortage, she has become an advocate for blood donation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere is nothing greater you can give someone than the gift of life. To have people donating lifesaving blood is just incredible and essential.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Incentives for Donation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Red Cross is asking everyone to donate blood, especially those with Type O blood.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the month of January\u2014which was National Blood Donor Month\u2014, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/local\/south-carolina\/about-us\/news-and-events\/news\/red-cross--nfl-partnering-during-national-blood-donor-month.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they partnered with the NFL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. During that time, anyone who donated blood, platelets, or plasma would have been automatically entered for a chance to win two tickets to the Super Bowl LVI, as well as a home theater package and a $500 electronic gift card to watch the game from home.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Outside of the Red Cross\u2019s partnership with the NFL, businesses nationwide are joining in efforts to end the blood shortage.
