On the evening of February 4<sup>th<\/sup>, students enthusiastically filled the bleachers, while teachers, parents, alumni, and administrators attended virtually (through a live stream coordinated by IMSA Student Productions). Attendees were quickly impressed, captivated by cultural fans, ribbons, and costumes, well-choreographed dances, and a moving play. Typically, <em>Lunar <\/em>is held in late January or early February, with students, parents, and teachers all viewing the show in the auditorium. However, due to COVID-19 mitigation measures, ASIA was directed to instead display the show in the Main Gym (similar to recommendations made to the Indian Student Association for their show, Diwali), with only students and on-campus faculty in physical attendance.<\/p>\n<p>This year, ASIA presented <strong>ten dances <\/strong>(each with a few choreographers)\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sophomore<\/li>\n<li>Korean Traditional<\/li>\n<li>Chinese Traditional<\/li>\n<li>Filipino Traditional<\/li>\n<li>SDAC<\/li>\n<li>Junior<\/li>\n<li>Senior<\/li>\n<li>B-Friend<\/li>\n<li>G-Friend<\/li>\n<li>Modern<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ASIA also chose to feature <strong>six other individual\/group <\/strong>performances\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yangqin<\/li>\n<li>Blossom<\/li>\n<li>Moon<\/li>\n<li>Medley<\/li>\n<li>Martial Arts<\/li>\n<li>Mod21<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ASIA complemented these acts with a self-written play,&nbsp; <em>Lunar New Year<\/em>. Unlike the Indian Student Association (ISA), ASIA chose to perform the play <strong>live<\/strong>, recruiting <strong>more than ten actors<\/strong>. As the name suggests, ASIA\u2019s play centered around the Lunar New Year, featuring characters who slowly begin to recognize and immerse themselves in their culture.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate Asian culture beyond just <em>Lunar<\/em>, ASIA, similar to previous years, chose to organize <strong>four midday<\/strong> <strong>events<\/strong>\u2026.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Red Envelopes.<\/strong> Students were given the opportunity to send a \u201cred envelope\u201d \u2013 a sign of good wishes \u2013 to friends.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cPorcelain\u201d Painting. <\/strong>ASIA educates students on the processes behind <em>fine China<\/em> \u2013 at this event, students were able to paint their own dish with cultural patterns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ASIA Artifact Gallery. <\/strong>In collaboration with Heliotrope, ASIA displayed work culturally relevant work created by student-artists at IMSA.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kahoot \u2013 Ramen. <\/strong>ASIA organized a <em>Kahoot <\/em>event, where students were asked about various cultural facts and traditions \u2013 the winner took home a mouth-watering box of ramen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the day of the show coming closer, ASIA\u2019s preparation became stronger, especially with new-found challenges \u2013 for instance, in light of inclement weather, IMSA administration chose to close the main building for all activities other than obtaining meals at Lexington on Wednesday (2\/2). No longer allowed to prepare in the main building, some choreographers and dancers chose to prepare in the Hall Commons.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, though, the night of the show came along. Right around 6:30 PM, ASIA President <strong>Jasmine Liu (\u201922) <\/strong>and Lunar Director<strong> Kevin Fan (\u201922) <\/strong>entered the stage and welcomed the hundreds of physical and virtual attendees. Even with some delays, students were captivated. The two hours of the show quickly went by, and right around 9:00 PM, Liu, Fan, and juniors<strong> Lily Song (\u201923) <\/strong>and <strong>Eddie Ning (\u201923) <\/strong>took to stage to conclude the show, thanking the choreographers, dancers, attendees, and all other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Now with their culture show complete, ASIA looks to continue to facilitate educational events throughout the year. Meanwhile, the fun doesn\u2019t come to an end for students \u2013 walk through the hallways after school and you\u2019ll likely see preparation going on for the next culture show, Harambee, coming live to the <em>Main Gym <\/em>on February 25<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, IMSA\u2019s Asian Students in America (ASIA) successfully organized their annual culture show, Lunar.
