A monumental day for the IMSA community. On this fateful summer morning, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy student William McClain made an astonishing post on the Facebook group known as ISMA Memes for Ethically Creative Teens.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was compelled to make it because I&#8217;d heard a lot of stories about IMSA lore and experienced some of it myself,&#8221; explained McClain,&#8221; I wanted to compile these experiences into one relatable format for both the preservation of IMSA culture for future generations and for the sharing of knowledge among the current IMSA population. I thought I&#8217;d bring back some ghosts from the past\u2026basically.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the help of McClain and IMSA Iceberg specialist Apurva Reddy, the true meaning of the IMSA iceberg, in its most raw state, has been extracted for the reading pleasure of the loyal <em>The Acronym<\/em> readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Sen\u00b7ior Wills<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Noun<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Senior Wills are personalized messages created by the graduating senior class for underclassmen. They are posted right here on <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Acronym<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">!<\/span><\/i>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI can\u2019t wait to read James Scarf\u2019s <\/span><\/i><b><i>Senior Will<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">! He was such an incredible mentor.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is something we all look forward to,\u201d says Reddy, \u201cbecause there tends to be better class bonding at IMSA than most schools. It\u2019s really just sentimental to look back and read on.\u201d Upper- and underclassmen alike look forward to senior wills as a final send off for the graduating class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Class Group Chats<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Noun<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Graduating class Facebook&nbsp;messenger group chats that are notorious for spam.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Graduating class snapchat group chats in which accidental group calls are started at least once a month.<\/span><\/i>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhy is the snap <\/span><\/i><b><i>class&nbsp;<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>group chat<\/b>&nbsp;always getting a call notif? They need to move the video call button.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>So\u00b7dex\u00b7o<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Noun<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IMSA\u2019s previous food vendor. It was not the most favorable meal choice among students but hey, they have an ice cream machine! Oh\u2026 nevermind it\u2019s broken.<\/span><\/i>\n<ul>\n<li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHey I don\u2019t have money for DoorDash. Do you wanna go to <\/span><\/i><b><i>Sodexo<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The IMSA cafeteria which is now known as Lexington.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>\u201cIMSA is permanently online\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Noun<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following the Covid-19 outbreak, complications with IMSA\u2019s ventilation system set back move-in day.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reddy goes on to clarify, \u201cMaybe three or four days before we were about to go back they canceled it [move in day].\u201d Many of IMSA\u2019s faculty and staff, including IMSA\u2019s residential counselors, were concerned for the safety of their students due to the state of the pandemic at the time, resulting in move-in day being postponed to a later date. \u201cIt was also pretty upsetting that, like, you go to IMSA and all of your other friends are able to go hybrid and you\u2019re still on your laptop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>\u201cEysturlid dancing to \u2018Shake It Off\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Noun<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tQEQ-tJRU1Y\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tQEQ-tJRU1Y<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Cam\u00b7el\u2019s Gate<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Noun<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The circular stone structure i<\/span><\/i><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">n front of IMSA&#8217;s main entrance.<\/span><\/i>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>&#8220;&#8230; wait that thing has a name? Wh-<strong> Camel&#8217;s Gate<\/strong>?&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McClain goes on to explain an urban legend associated with the structure. He&#8217;s never been the same&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8220;Ok this one is genuinely a mystery,&#8221; admits Reddy. &#8220;You know how if you walk from old caf to A-wing, there&#8217;s this hallway in the middle where student life is? If you look to the left, there&#8217;s two little hallways there and nobody knows what those hallways are. It just a bunch of bright lighting and hallways that lead to random office spaces.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>MI5<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Noun<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i>A play on a non-existent 5th part to the Mathematical Investigations series that a majority of IMSA students must complete. The series runs from MI-1 through MI-4.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Closing Notes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When asked what McClain wanted past, present, and future IMSA students to take away from the Iceberg, he gave a rather profound response.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The walls have history from beyond our time. You can appreciate it from a distance but don&#8217;t go delving too deep or the walls might take you, too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Iceberg in actuality is a fluid thing, changing from year to year.
