{"id":33028,"date":"2022-04-22T14:32:31","date_gmt":"2022-04-22T19:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=33028"},"modified":"2022-04-25T09:29:11","modified_gmt":"2022-04-25T14:29:11","slug":"oscars-2022-smiths-slap-and-award-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2022\/04\/22\/oscars-2022-smiths-slap-and-award-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscars 2022: Smith&#8217;s Slap and Award Winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On March 27, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/oscars\/ceremonies\/2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">awards ceremony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> took place at the Oscars&#8217; traditional home at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and aired live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From Will Smith smacking Chris Rock to the Oscars winners being announced, this year\u2019s Oscars was filled to the brim with excitement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Before the Slap<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Comedian Chris Rock took the stage to present the best documentary feature award. In a televised interview on April 1, Oscars producer Will Packer gave insight into what occurred before the slap.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI said, \u2018Watch this, he\u2019s going to kill.\u2019 I knew he had an amazing lineup of jokes that we had, we had them in the prompter. And ultimately he did not get to one joke. He didn\u2019t tell one of the planned jokes, he was just immediately freestyling \u2014 but I&#8217;ll tell you, if there\u2019s anybody you don\u2019t worry about going out in front a live audience and riffing off the cuff, it\u2019s Chris Rock. Nobody\u2019s better,&#8221; Packer said on &#8220;Good Morning America.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While Rock was presenting an award, Jada Pinkett Smith\u2019s head was jokingly compared to Demi Moore\u2019s bald \u201cG.I. Jane\u201d character. Rock turned to Pinkett Smith and said, \u201cJada, I love you. \u2018G.I. Jane 2,\u2019 I can\u2019t wait to see it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Slap<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After seeing that his wife was upset, Smith took the stage and slapped Rock across the face. Smith returned to his seat and bellowed at Rock, \u201cKeep my wife\u2019s name out of your [redacted] mouth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Later when Smith was accepting the Best Actor award for his leading role in the tennis drama \u201cKing Richard,\u201d Smith apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Explaining his actions Smith said, \u201cLove will make you do crazy things. To do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse. You got to be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you got to smile, you got to pretend like that\u2019s okay.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>After the Slap<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following day, he issued a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CbqmaY1p7Pz\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> public apology on Instagram <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">directed to Rock, \u201cthe Academy, the producers of the show, and all the attendees and everyone watching around the world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Instagram, he wrote, \u201cMy behavior at last night\u2019s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about my Jada\u2019s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two days after the slap, The Academy met with Will Smith over Zoom before its board of governors to discuss the actor&#8217;s Oscar attack on Chris Rock. Smith apologized to Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson during the call. He said that he is aware that hitting Rock will have repercussions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On April 1, Will Smith resigned from the Academy. In a statement provided to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/will-smith-resigns-from-academy-membership-1235123801\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Smith said he had \u201cbetrayed\u201d the trust of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with conduct that was \u201cshocking, painful, and inexcusable.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He said in the statement: \u201cI have directly responded to the Academy\u2019s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His statement continued: \u201cI deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He concluded: &#8220;So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.
