{"id":33515,"date":"2022-05-20T17:17:08","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T22:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=33515"},"modified":"2022-05-24T13:29:25","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T18:29:25","slug":"recovering-from-the-virtual-era-a-summary-of-imsa-robotics-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2022\/05\/20\/recovering-from-the-virtual-era-a-summary-of-imsa-robotics-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Recovering From the Virtual Era: A Summary of IMSA Robotics&#8217; Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Titan Robotics, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/titanrobotics2022.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IMSA\u2019s FRC Robotics Team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, had a successful year competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) and other off-season competitions which work to teach their members \u201ctechnical skills, such as mechanical programming, electrical, and computer aided design (CAD), as well as soft skills involving business, leadership, and communication.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the FIRST Robotics Competition?<\/b><b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Titan Robotics is an FRC Team that has its application season begin when Titan Robotics veteran members reapply for the team in the summer and rookies apply at the start of the school year. Upon acceptance, members begin preparing for the competition as soon as school starts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gray Pacourek, Head of the Design and Integration Team, describes FRC as a \u201crobotics competition in which students build a robot in a six-week period to compete against other teams to perform a series of tasks. Our team has a senior and junior captain who manage the team and the different subteams that make it up.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Breakdown of FRC Subteams<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pacourek adds that within the FRC there are subteams, which \u201cinclude the Mechanical, Electrical, Programming, Design and Integration, Software, and Business teams. The teams work together to coordinate the design, construction, and programming of the robot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Here is a breakdown of the subteams:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mechanical team<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> works toward building the robot and putting it together. This includes building shooters, working on intake, and making sure the robot works.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Electrical team<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> works on wiring, which is what drives the robot.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Programming team<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> works on programming.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Design and Integration team<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> works on designing the robot through utilization of computer-aided design (CAD).&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Titan Software team<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> works on scouting.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Business team<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> works on getting funding and securing sponsorships.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Robotics Team Intersession<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FRC Robotics Team Intersession goes toward preparations for the FRC competition in March. Intersession is time to work \u201cwith Robotics Team prototypes and build the robot, so it is essential to be in-person,\u201d Kevin Lemus, an FRC team member, continues, \u201cOnline Intersession hindered our progress because all we could do was CAD the robot or talk about the game.\u201d In comparison, he shares that \u201cin person Intersession is entirely used to work on the robot in the lab. Being virtual made us fall back a couple weeks.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alongside Intersession being a time dedicated toward preparation for FRC, Titan Robotics also attended two in-person events held by Gear It Forward throughout the season. The first event was held on January 8, 2022, which is around Intersession and the start of the build season. Pacourek shares that \u201c[the team] saw the game reveal and brainstormed ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The second event, referred to as \u201cWeek Zero\u201d because it is the week leading up to the start of competitions, was held on February 19, 2022. In this week of preparation, \u201cmost teams already had assembled robots and were able to show off what they had and compare ideas with other teams\u201d Pacourek says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Regionals<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Titan Robotics competed in two major regionals: Iowa regionals and Midwest Regionals in Chicago. The Titan Robotics board and its mentor, Grant Bell, manage the planning of the members signing up for regionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Iowa Regional<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/robotics.uni.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> FRC Iowa Regional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> brought \u201ctogether more than 40 teams from the Midwest to compete in the University of Northern Iowa McLeod Center.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As for the outcome of the Iowa regionals, Pacourek relays that \u201cThe Iowa Regional did not go very well for [the team]. We ran into lots of issues that prevented our robot from working to the best of its abilities and, in the end, we were not picked during alliance selection [which is a draft where the top eight seeds pick two teams to join them in playoffs]. There were no real ups for that competition as it was overall a very disappointing event.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regardless of Titan Robotics not making playoffs due to complications with their intake and shooter, they put in their best efforts and that in itself is impressive work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Midwest Regional<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The FRC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstillinoisrobotics.org\/frc\/events\/midwest-regional\/#:~:text=April%206th%20%2D%209th%2C%202022,teams%20of%20high%20school%20students.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Midwest Regional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is \u201can international, intense three-day event showcasing robots developed and operated by teams of high school students.\u201d This year, the competition took place from April 6th\u20139th in Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From all of Friday through Saturday morning, a series of Qualifying Round matches were played between randomly selected teams to decide the top eight individual teams. After, those top eight teams would select two other teams that they would like to have join them in forming an alliance for the Playoff Matches.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Saturday afternoon, the eight alliances compete in the Quarterfinal Matches and only four alliances move onto the Semi-Final Matches. After, two alliances will face off in the Finals for the title of Midwest Regional Champion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the Iowa regional may have not gone as expected for Titan Robotics, Pacourek shares that \u201cThe Midwest Regional went much better than the Iowa Regional. Our robot was modified heavily in between competitions in order to fix the many issues we ran into.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAt this competition we were able to make it all the way to the finals where we finally lost, missing out on qualifying for worlds by a hair. Our robot performed much better at this competition and we were able to show off many of the cool features of our robot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>FIRST Tech Challenge 2022<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another Robotics competition IMSA students dedicate their time toward is the First Tech Challenge (FTC).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstinspires.org\/robotics\/ftc\/game-and-season\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">this year\u2019s FTC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, teams addressed today\u2019s global challenges related to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">United Nations Sustainable Development (UN SDG) Goal\u202f#9<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(industry, innovation, and infrastructure)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. They <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstinspires.org\/robotics\/ftc\/game-and-season\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">accomplished this <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">through focusing on \u201cbuilding resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pacourek describes FTC as \u201ca smaller competition that builds smaller robots but apart from that the overall structure is pretty similar.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On March 1, 2022, the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Team TITANS advanced to the state tournament on March 12th. They placed 3rd overall out of 25 teams. Then, on March 5th at the IL FTC-Southern\/Central\/Western League Tournament, TITANS were winners for the Think Award and 2nd place for the Inspire Award.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>FIRST Robotics Competition 2022&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 2022 FRC competition was a transportation-themed competition, called Rapid React. Its focus was on the UN SDG Goal #9 (industry, innovation, and infrastructure). This year\u2019s game consisted of the teams working towards shooting cargo into hubs. The game\u2019s points system was that a shot in the upper hub garnered two points and one in the lower hub earned one point. An in-depth video that explains the 2022 FRC Robotics Competition Rapid React can be found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LgniEjI9cCM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teams are grouped into two different competing groups, one of red alliance and the other of blue alliance. Both teams are tasked with processing cargo for transportation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is a timeline of the competition:&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Auto period:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Robots are programmed to work by themselves.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">15 second \u201ctele-operated period\u201d:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Robots work automatically.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Balls in the upper hub count as 4 pts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the course of the game:&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Red alliance robots collect red cargo (kickballs).<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blue does the same with their cargo.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHuman players\u201d are situated at the terminals along the outside of the mat&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Allowed to assist with \u201ccargo retrieval and scoring\u201d from the sidelines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the end (usually at the end at 30 seconds left):<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Robots can try to climb the rungs of the hangar in order to score more points.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Titan Robotics 2022<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last year, being only a virtual experience, hindered this year\u2019s Titan Robotics\u2019 performance. Lemus shares that last year was primarily focused on training, and Pacourek says that \u201cOne of the biggest problems we had this year was the lack of experience due to not having a real season last year. Because IMSA students only stay here for 3 years, the only people who had experienced at least part of an FRC season were the current seniors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSo when it came time to work on the robot, we were the only ones who knew what we were doing. This forced us to rely on the seniors and caused us to run into a lot of problems we probably should have known about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although last year left Titan Robotics in a tough situation for this year, Lemus states that, \u201cThis year was a lot more fun. . . . Also, the competition was a lot different. [Last year] was like designing a game instead of actually competing a game.\u201d He adds that this year he spent his time \u201clearning how to use CAD, solid works, and how to do things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As for Pacourek\u2019s experience, he shares a highlight of this year in Titan Robotics for him was that \u201cThis year is much much better than last year. Because we were virtual last year we didn\u2019t have access to the lab so were not able to actually compete or build a robot. This year we had full access to the lab and were able to function like a normal year.
