{"id":35754,"date":"2023-02-01T19:46:36","date_gmt":"2023-02-02T01:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=35754"},"modified":"2023-02-01T19:46:36","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T01:46:36","slug":"brittney-griners-journey-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2023\/02\/01\/brittney-griners-journey-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Brittney Griner&#8217;s Journey Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On February 17, 2022, now 32-year-old WNBA (Women&#8217;s National Basketball Association) star, Brittney Griner, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/wnba-brittney-griner-detained-russia-hash-oil-luggage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was detained <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for possessing cannabis oil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in her luggage after arriving in Moscow from New York City. She was released on December 8 of this past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the WNBA off-season, the Phoenix Mercury star plays for UMMC Ekaterinburg, a Russian basketball team. Upon Griner&#8217;s arrival at Sheremetyevo International Airport, a customs dog indicated that there were drugs in her carry-on bag. After searching Griner&#8217;s bag, officers discovered vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She was taken into Russian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/brittney-grines-wnba-star-arrested-russia\/11626895\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">custody<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and charged with smuggling &#8220;narcotic drugs&#8221; into the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On March 17, 2022, Griner was ordered to remain in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/brittney-griner-russia-detention-extended-wnba-hostage-ukraine-invasion-1688964\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">custody <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for an additional two months. Her detainment was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/brittney-griners-detention-extended-by-one-month-after-making-a-brief-public-appearance-in-court\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">extended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for another month on May 13, after she had made a brief appearance in court, and once again <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/brittney-griner-russia-detention-extended-reports\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on June 15,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Griner&#8217;s lawyer, however, reported the trial was set for July 1. Meanwhile, fellow athletes including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/lebron-james-calls-for-brittney-griner-safe-return-voice-as-athletes-stronger-together\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lebron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/megan-rapinoe-wears-suit-honoring-brittney-griner-in\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Megan Rapinoe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/wnba-star-brittney-griner-honored-during-2022-espy-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stephen Curry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/charles-barkley-hopes-brittney-griner-comes-home-soon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Charles Barkley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/sue-bird-says-teammates-have-gotten-letters-from-brittney-griner-we-let-her-know-shes-not-forgotten\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Sue Bird<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> voiced support, while the House passed a bipartisan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/house-passes-bipartisan-resolution-pushing-russia-release-wnba-player-brittney-griner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">resolution <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pushing Russia for her release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After a long, arduous, and emotional trial, on August 4, Griner was sentenced to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/brittney-griner-sentenced-to-9-years-in-russian-prison\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">9 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in prison on charges of smuggling drugs into the country. Griner&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/08\/04\/world\/brittney-griner-trial-verdict-russia\/947a335a-f362-53d8-9e37-2be1c36bd072?smid=url-share\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lawyers <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said the verdict was &#8220;absolutely unreasonable&#8221; and said they will &#8220;certainly file an appeal.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On August 15, the appeal for Griner&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/brittney-griner-lawyers-file-appeal-against-russia-drug-conviction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">verdict<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> began, but a month later, on October 25th, the appeal was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/brittney-griners-russian-prison-sentence-upheld\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">denied <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and the verdict remained. On November 17, Griner&#8217;s lawyers confirmed that she had been moved to IK-2 female penal colony in a small town about seven hours from Moscow. Former prisoners and human rights activists said the prison where Griner was placed was infamous for its<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sports\/brittney-griner-russian-penal-colony-not-good-place\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> cruel treatment of female inmates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On December 8, Griner was released after nearly 10 months in Russian custody. She was released in agreement to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/brittney-griner-release-russia-prisoner-swap-viktor-bout\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">one-on-one prisoner swap deal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for international arms dealer Viktor Bout, who was sentenced to be in a US prison until 2029. &#8220;Moments ago I spoke to Brittney Griner. She is safe. She is on a plane.
