Welcome to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA)! Whether you are an incoming sophomore or a seasoned upperclassman, IMSA has a unique culture filled with its own set of acronyms, slang, and traditions. Here\u2019s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate IMSA lingo and some must-know details about campus life.<\/span><\/p>\n

AC Pit<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pronounced \u201cack pit,\u201d this lecture room in the main building has many identifiable features, including glass doors, downward steps, and a wooden stage. This room is primarily used and reserved by teachers for test-taking but also hosts extracurriculars such as… The Acronym<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Access Road<\/strong><\/p>\n

A winding road around campus, often used for walks with friends or significant others. An IMSA experience isn\u2019t complete without an Access walk. <\/span><\/p>\n

CAB \u2013 Campus Activities Board<\/strong><\/p>\n

Responsible for organizing and executing campus events, including the popular Clash of the Halls (sometimes referred to as CoTH).<\/span><\/p>\n

CAC \u2013 College and Academic Counselors<\/strong><\/p>\n

Assigned to students based on last names, CACs assist with college-related decisions, financial aid, testing, and course selection.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clash \u2013 CoTH, Clash of the Halls<\/strong><\/p>\n

A second-semester event where halls compete in various activities over a week, including hall decorations, riddles, and pep rallies.<\/span><\/p>\n

IN2 \u2013 Center for Innovation & Inquiry<\/strong><\/p>\n

A space visible from the main entrance dedicated to innovation and inquiry, hosting extracurricular meetings, study sessions, and relaxation with friends.<\/span><\/p>\n

IRC \u2013 Information Resource Center<\/strong><\/p>\n

The library upstairs, offering materials for checkout and resources like printers, is ideal for studying between classes.<\/span><\/p>\n

ISP \u2013 IMSA Student Productions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Documents campus events through photos and videos. Join their Facebook page for access to these moments.<\/span><\/p>\n

IVC \u2013 IMSA Virtual Campus<\/strong><\/p>\n

A crucial Facebook page for club and student body announcements.<\/span><\/p>\n

LEAD \u2013 Leadership Education and Development<\/strong><\/p>\n

A mandatory program for sophomores teaching leadership skills through CORE in the first semester and electives like SocENT, EnACT, or IMPACT in the second semester, culminating in SLX.<\/span><\/p>\n

SLX \u2013 Student Leadership and Education Exchange<\/strong><\/p>\n

The end-of-year event where sophomores present LEAD projects.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mid-Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

The designated lunch period without classes, often bustling with students grabbing a quick bite.<\/span><\/p>\n

NAV \u2013 Sophomore Navigation<\/strong><\/p>\n

A mandatory program for sophomores discussing various topics, complementing LEAD.<\/span><\/p>\n

Old Caf<\/strong><\/p>\n

The area outside Lexington, now a spot for club events and dance practices.<\/span><\/p>\n

RC \u2013 Resident Counselors<\/strong><\/p>\n

Each hall has 3-4 RCs acting as parental figures, ensuring safety and support.<\/span><\/p>\n

RSL \u2013 Residential Student Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n

Halls have RSLs with different roles: Wing Liaison, HCC, and HDC, responsible for organizing events and promoting community.<\/span><\/p>\n

SSA \u2014 Science Study Area<\/strong><\/p>\n

A quiet, out-of-the-way homework spot in the main building.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shmen<\/strong><\/p>\n

Affectionate term for sophomores who skipped their 9th grade of high school. Variations include \u201cpseudo shmen\u201d and \u201csuper shmen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

SIR \u2013 Student Inquiry and Research<\/strong><\/p>\n

Available to juniors and seniors on I-Days, offering research opportunities with IMSA teachers or Chicago-area professors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Slabs<\/strong><\/p>\n

Areas in front of 1502 and 1505 with giant concrete blocks resembling benches, known for slab parties.<\/span><\/p>\n

SoCC \/ JCC \/ SCC<\/strong><\/p>\n

Class clubs: Sophomore Class Club, Junior Class Club, and Senior Class Club, raising money for prom and negotiating privileges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lexington<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cafeteria, infamous for its repetitive food but a place of many student memories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stunion \u2013 Student Union<\/strong><\/p>\n

A hangout spot near the main gym with a dance studio and ping pong table.<\/span><\/p>\n

TV Pit <\/strong><\/p>\n

Next to Old Caf, a meeting spot for students and clubs.<\/span><\/p>\n

U Benches<\/strong><\/p>\n

Benches at the bottom of staircases, designated for each class but open to all students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yare<\/strong><\/p>\n

The field between the main building and the first four halls, named after a statue with letters resembling Y, A, R, and E from different angles.<\/span><\/p>\n
