{"id":7691,"date":"2012-11-12T21:07:50","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T21:07:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/?p=7691"},"modified":"2012-11-13T04:46:23","modified_gmt":"2012-11-13T04:46:23","slug":"dr-dong-speaking-aficionado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2012\/11\/12\/dr-dong-speaking-aficionado\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Dong: Speaking Aficionado"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Dong is one of the most prolific speakers at IMSA.\u00a0 Many students look forward to his appearances at Junior Ethics, the Senior Graduation Banquet, and his numerous debates throughout the year.\u00a0 Recently, when Studco held a vote on who should be the next teacher to give a last lecture, Dr. Dong topped the list. The student body enjoys Dr. Dong\u2019s public speaking and have showed an interest in learning more from him.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Dong participated in Lincoln-Douglas debates throughout\u00a0 high school.\u00a0 Although he did not win an endless\u00a0string of awards, Dr. Dong had \u00a0 coach that helped him improve in his debating skills. \u00a0He did not participate in speech team in college because, he felt as if some debate team members did not take the team seriously enough.\u00a0 During and after his schooling, Dr. Dong\u00a0has spoken many times at his local church.\u00a0 He thinks the experience gained from delivering these messages and the experiences gained from teaching has helped him to become a successful speaker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/2012\/11\/12\/dr-dong-speaking-aficionado\/dong\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7716\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-7716\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2012\/11\/dong-300x256.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2012\/11\/dong-300x256.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2012\/11\/dong-600x512.png 600w, https:\/\/sites.imsa.edu\/acronym\/files\/2012\/11\/dong.png 729w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/a>According to Dr. Dong, good speaking is about directing nervousness.\u00a0 He used to be extremely nervous when speaking in public\u00a0 but\u00a0 through practice and experience,\u00a0 he now becomes less nervous when debating.\u00a0 For Dr. Dong, good speeches have two parts: the technical and the emotional.<\/p>\n<p>The technical aspect is how one speaks and expresses emotion.\u00a0 It is important to have a coach that can catch minute technical errors that take away from one\u2019s speaking.\u00a0 For example, many people find it natural and comfortable to gesture with open fingers.\u00a0 However, an audience finds that gestures with closed fingers look more forceful and project confidence.\u00a0 Another example of the technical aspect of a speech is how one speaks when emphasizing a point.\u00a0 Many speakers try to talk louder and faster when emphasizing a point but instead one should slow done and speak quietly in order to make the audience strain to pay attention.<\/p>\n<p>The emotional aspect\u00a0 is how a speech expresses pathos.\u00a0 Dr. Dong has found it\u00a0 important for a speech to follow an arc.\u00a0 First, the speech should be lighthearted and humorous.
