Getting to Know You

Unit Objectives

TIME:  2 weeks

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • greet your classmates using time–of–day specific greetings.
  • exchange greeting with classmates as if meeting them for the first time.
  • use appropriate set phrases for entering and leaving the classroom.
  • ask and answer questions about your and your classmates’ names.
  • count from 1 to 100.
  • ask and answer questions about your and your classmates’ ages.
  • ask and answer questions about your and your classmates’ telephone & cell phone numbers.
  • ask and answer questions about your and your classmates’ addresses at IMSA (hall/wing/room).
  • write your own name and the names of your classmates in katakana.
  • write your own age and those of your classmates in kanji.
  • write your own telephone number and those of your classmates in kanji.
  • write your own address and those of your classmates in kanji.

By the end of this unit, you will have learned:

  • a large number (half to two–thirds?) of the 45 phonetic symbols in the katakana set, which is used for writing foreign loan words.
  • the kanji for the numbers one through ten.
  • how to write discrete pieces of information — not yet writing in complete sentences.
  • the kanji for “years old”.
  • what to say when you’re unsure, instead of the English/American “ummm”.
