IMSA’s advanced belief system is vastly different from other schools, and its requirements reflect its ideology. A notable belief statement from IMSA declares: “Belonging to a community requires commitment to the common good.” To achieve that end, students must accumulate 200 community service hours to graduate.
Students have the ability to fulfill to balance this steep hour requirement: between 30 to 125 hours can be completed internally at IMSA, while an additional 75 to 170 hours are earned through external activities. Up to 50 hours can be completed out of the state/country.Additionally, students can organize their community efforts per year. By the end of sophomore year, students are encouraged to have completed 65 hours, with a goal of reaching 100 hours midway through junior year, and finally achieving the full 200 hours by spring break of senior year.
Full school events like Clash of the Halls not only unite our school community but also serve as incentives to contribute towards the community, since they usually have service hour requirements. Hours are logged through HelperHelper, after which they are sent to the coordinator for approval. Then the RC has to approve the hours and enter them into PowerSchool, which serves as the official record of completion.
