So You Think You Can Breakdance

Over the summer, the world’s greatest athletes from all over the world had the opportunity to compete in the fiercest of all competitions: the Olympics. The Paris 2024 Olympics brought tears of happiness, screams of excitement, and a new event! Breaking, or unofficially known as breakdancing, made its debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Has it ever been your dream to go to the Olympics? Below I’ve got some moves from an actual Olympic athlete that can guarantee your acceptance to the Olympics!

1. Leaning Back Karate Kid

The kick that won the championship! Cup your hands and bring them up like a dog, stand on one leg, bring the other knee up, and lean back. Now you can fulfill your dream of being like Ralph Macchio! DISCLAIMER: This move is not intended to break anyone’s nose. Also you might fall on your back if you have bad balance.

2. Contemplating Life on Floor

In Foundations of Healthy Living, or Moving and Learning, we all had to learn how to warm up your triceps: the cross-body stretch. Contemplating Life on Floor is basically the same concept, except the arm that is crossing the body is touching the floor, and your chin is in between your index finger and thumb like you are trying to figure out the meaning of life.

3. The Kangaroo

Once again, you are going to cup your palms, but this time bend your arms so they look like kangaroo arms. Then, start bouncing up and down but make sure you are moving to different areas so you’ll be exactly like a kangaroo! WARNING! Might only appease Australian judges.

4. Sprinkler

An oldie but a goodie! Place one hand on the back of your head/neck and keep your other arm straight, perpendicular to your body, and move it like you are moving the x-coordinate and not the y-coordinate of a line.

5. Swimming in Air

If you’ve ever gone swimming before and couldn’t reach the bottom, or have tripped on air and are trying to regain your balance, you’ve most likely flailed your arms before. That’s exactly what you do in this move except for the tripping or drowning part. Do this in the beginning of your dance so you can show those judges you mean business!

There you have it! Five simple, amazing breakdancing moves that, if you practice hard enough, could maybe get you qualified for the Olympics. Breakdancing will not be an event at Los Angeles 2028, but maybe the Olympic Committee will reinstate breakdancing and you could win the chance to earn a gold medal at the Olympics!
