The two school resource officers approached Gray in the hall and he immediately surrendered. Four people, two 14-year-old students, and two teachers were killed, and nine others were injured. Colt confessed, was charged with four counts of felony murder, and will be tried as an adult. Colin Gray, Colt’s father was also arrested on multiple counts of involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder, and cruelty to children. The gun was said to be a Christmas gift and authorities state that Colin knowingly gave his son possession despite the risks. Other officers began searching Colin and Colt Gray’s house as students were evacuated to the football field.

Investigators also found that Gray’s Discord account was connected to a username in Russian, which translated to “Lanza,” a reference to Adam Lanza, the gunman behind the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. Despite the disturbing nature of these revelations, authorities did not have sufficient evidence at the time to press charges or confiscate firearms from the household. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp extended his condolences to the victims’ families and called for a period of reflection on the state’s approach to school safety. “This is a day every parent dreads, and Georgians everywhere will hug their children tighter this evening because of this painful event” he stated.
