Class of 2027’s New SOCC President

Devika Kalavagunta, new SOCC president

September 8th marked the day for new student council elections. Among the elections Devika Kalavagunta stepped up as the sophomore class’s new Class Club President. Today we sat down with her to discuss her new goals and ideas for making the class of 2027 have a truly fabulous prom!

Why did you decide to run for SOCC President?
When I saw the possibility of being able to contribute to making IMSA’s prom amazing, I knew I had to take it. I had seen previous years where other Class Club Presidents were able to make proms that truly wrapped up a perfect senior year. I wanted to be part of that magic.

What goals do you have for the class of 2027’s prom?
I just want to make sure everyone has a great time at prom and have it be an event that they’ll remember for years to come. I also want to give the class of 2027 some great fundraisers as well! I’m super excited to start doing food carts and other fundraisers during the second semester.

Everyone loves the class club food carts; what are some of your ideas?
I have a lot of ideas. Some of mine right now are Crumbl cookies, partnering with local Indian restaurants, and I have plans for some Valentine’s Day events!

How have the first few weeks being on SOCC been like? Do you enjoy it?
I really like it so far! I’ve only done concessions as of right now, but even doing just that, it’s given me a chance to reach out to my fellow peers and show them just how far their small donations can go. I’m super excited to get more involved and eventually be able to do some bigger fundraisers starting second semester!

What would you say to next year’s sophomores who might want to apply?
Make sure to be yourself in your application. That’s the most important part. If you’re a good fit for the role, that will show through! Something that also helped me was reaching out to upperclassmen to look over my application; sometimes other people catch things you don’t normally see. And in general, be very extroverted so that you can get your name out there.

What is your favorite thing about the IMSA community so far?
I would say the birthday parties. I love how everyone comes together to celebrate someone’s birthday. It’s always really fun to be part of the surprise and help put everything together. It’s a fun thing about IMSA that I didn’t know about till I got here and I’ve really enjoyed being part of.

It looks like the class of 2027 has a great prom to look forward to. The SOCC team is already working hard to raise funds. So make sure to support SOCC by buying concessions and supporting fundraisers!
