On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, the 2020 Billboard Music Awards took place, uniting pop, country, Latin, R&B, and Hip Hop. With Kelly Clarkson hosting (for the third year in a row), musicians gathered to sing, talk politics, encourage viewers to vote, and of course, take home awards.
The night included wonderful performances from Alicia Keys, Bad Bunny, BTS, Doja Cat, John Legend, Luke Combs, Saint Jhn, and SIA. Viewers also saw several collaboration performances including Kane Brown, Swae Lee and Khalid performing “Be Like That,” Brandy and Ty Dolla $ign performing a medley, and Post Malone and Tyla Yaweh performing “Circles/Tommy Lee“. En Vogue performed their classic “Free Your Mind“. The event was certainly filled with fun music and electric renditions. In a pandemic era, the show lacked some of the usual gusto with in-person performances but still managed to pull off a relatively seamless event.

Highlights of the night:

In a dress with “VOTE” written all across it, Lizzo accepted her Top Song Sales Artist Award and said, “I just want to say I’ve been thinking a lot about suppression and the voices that refused to be suppressed. And I wonder would I be standing here right if it weren’t for the big black women who refused to have their voices be suppressed.” The entrepreneur, activist, and hip hop artist Killer Mike was awarded the first-ever Billboard Changemaker Award for his extraordinary work for Black Americans. Cher presented the Icon Award to Garth Brooks claiming that he has reformed the face of the country with 19 #1 hits, 17 #1 albums, and 9 #1 on the billboard 200 album chart.

Post Malone was not only nominated for the most awards, but he also won the most awards that night, taking home the Top Artist prize and 8 other awards. Demi Lovato premiered her song “Commander In Chief” at the show featuring lyrics like “We’re in a state of crisis, people are dyin’/While you line your pockets deep/ Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still/ Be able to breathe?” directed at President Trump.
