In an exciting development for students at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), representatives from Westlake University, a prestigious STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) university in China, recently paid a visit to the renowned institution. The visit aimed to inform IMSA students about admissions to Westlake University and provide them with an opportunity to explore the campus firsthand while engaging in STEM experiences.
Dr. Wendy Bigler, a College and Academic Counselor (CAC) at IMSA, sent out an email to IMSA’s sophomores and juniors, informing them of the visit and the subsequent summer opportunity offered by Westlake University. The email, sent on behalf of all the CACs, outlined the details of the summer program, scheduled to take place from July 9 to July 24, 2023. In an interview with Dr. Bigler, she stated what she “hopes students would take away from it is to have an experience in another country, and then look at STEM education in China and see if that’s something that they might be interested in for their university.”
As to how Westlake planned this visit, Dr. Bigler said, “they were in contact with Evan Glazer (IMSA’s President), and through that contact it went to Manuel Donelson (CAC), and then I achieved it.”
During their visit, Westlake University, known for its strong focus on STEM education, presented the IMSA students with valuable insights into the university’s admissions process. The representatives also extended an invitation to the students, offering them an immersive experience on their campus. The visit to Westlake University would not only allow IMSA students to learn more about the institution, but also participate in various STEM activities, further enriching their educational journey.
The collaboration between IMSA and Westlake University serves as a testament to the institutions’ shared commitment to nurturing and empowering the next generation of STEM leaders.
