In its quest to push the boundaries of STEM education, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) has unveiled a visionary FY25 budget. With the goal of “igniting and nurturing creative, ethical, scientific minds that advance the human condition,” IMSA is poised for a transformative leap forward. One of these ways is through renovating the campus. IMSA’s approach to campus revitalization is twofold, targeting both the residence halls and the academic building. The proposed Residence Hall Replacement and Academic Building Renovations projects represent a holistic effort to create an environment that fosters innovation, safety, and sustainability.
Residence Hall Replacement
IMSA recognizes the need for expansion to accommodate the evolving landscape of education. With an enrollment boost through out-of-state tuition initiatives, IMSA aims to construct a new residential facility. The $130 million Residence Hall Replacement project is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s a strategic move to secure the academy’s future.
If unfunded, IMSA proposes a $27 million renovation plan for residence halls, addressing essential upgrades to bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces.
Academic Building Renovations
At the heart of IMSA’s transformation is the $60 million Academic Building Renovations project. Envisioned as a fusion of modernity and functionality, this undertaking includes the renovation of existing spaces and the addition of cutting-edge facilities. A whopping 80,000 square feet of new space will house state-of-the-art instructional facilities, research spaces, and administration and student support services.
In the event of funding challenges, IMSA has alternative proposals, such as infrastructure upgrades and safety initiatives.
Addressing Urgent Infrastructure Needs
IMSA’s commitment extends beyond the visible structures to the vital infrastructure that sustains the campus. Requests for funding include:
Property Infrastructure Systems Upgrades: $3.6 million to overhaul outdated sewage and storm systems, ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.
Fire Sprinkler Upgrades: A $2.4 million project to enhance fire safety coverage, providing a crucial layer of protection for the entire campus.
School Safety, Secure Entry Project: A $650,000 initiative to install secure-entry vestibules, access control systems, and emergency notification systems, fortifying the first line of defence against potential threats.
External Door Replacement: A $976,000 endeavour to replace ageing doors with energy-efficient options, augmenting safety and reducing heating and cooling costs.
